At one time the land on which St. Augustine [Episcopal Church, Danville, IN] is located was all apple orchards. As
the gentleman who owned the land got older, he had his right hand man cut down the trees until there were only two trees from
the original orchard left. Upon his death, the land was willed to the Episcopal Church.
When the church took over they remodeled
the "apple house" building where the picked apples were stored to be used for Sunday school classes. In the early 1980's
St. Augustine's decided they wanted to utilize the building during the week for some use by the community. They sent out 500 letters,
receiving 2 back, one from a group of mothers wanting to start a preschool coop.
In 1983 Apple House Preschool Coop, Inc. was begun and is now in its 25th year. Apple House moved to Avon Christian Church in 1992
and was housed there for 13 years. We moved again to Grace Fellowship Church in 2005, and now we are located at Avon Parkside.
Apple
House was established to provide activities to help children develop healthy personalities and self-reliance, adjust socially and
prepare them for the school experience.
The Co-op's philosophy is a simple one...children, parents and a teacher go to school
together, each learning from the other. Our professional teacher is
supported by two participating parents for each class meeting. Parents participating in the classroom are an integral part of
the school's philosophy.
Apple House has a developmentally appropriate curriculum, where the children enjoy hands on learning
experiences with a wide variety of materials and equipment available to them. The program focuses on creative play and guided
self-discovery.
Apple House Preschool Cooperative, Inc. is a non-profit, cooperative preschool. We are owned and maintained
by the parents of the preschool. This allows us to keep tuition costs down and ensures that the parents have control of their
child's education. While Apple House is happy to be housed in Avon Parkside, our school is not a part of the church organization,
nor does it teach religion in the classroom.
